"Where do I even start?" That was my exact thought before my first visit to Gotemba Premium Outlets, and it's the question I hear most from friends coming from overseas.
Gotemba Premium Outlets is one of Japan's largest outlet malls, with about 290 stores spread across three zones at the foot of Mt. Fuji. On a clear morning, you step out of the parking lot and the mountain fills the whole sky in front of you, with that crisp highland air on your face. I've been more times than I can count, camera in hand, and that view still stops me every time.

Store List & Floor Map
The outlet is split into WEST ZONE, EAST ZONE, and HILL SIDE, linked by two pedestrian bridges, Yume no Ohashi and Kibo no Ohashi. You get around entirely on foot, and there are some slopes, so knowing which zone your target stores are in before you arrive saves a lot of walking.

Getting There & Parking
By Train, Bus, or Car
Train + free shuttle bus
Go to JR Gotemba Station, then take the free shuttle bus (about 15–20 minutes). From Shinjuku, the Odakyu limited express "Fujisan" runs straight to Gotemba Station with no transfer.
Direct highway bus
Direct buses run from Shinjuku, Tokyo Station, Yokohama, and other hubs. No driving means more energy for shopping, and it's the stress-free option on busy holidays.
Car
About 2 km from Gotemba IC on the Tomei Expressway, and close to Ashigara Smart IC. Ashigara Service Area makes a great stop on the way home.

All parking is free. On weekends and during sales, though, traffic backs up from Gotemba IC to the lot entrances. I always aim for lot P7. Why, and the back route that skips the worst of the traffic, are in the guide above.

Lockers, ATMs & Smoking Areas
Once the shopping bags pile up, drop them in a coin locker (3 locations) and keep going. Need cash? There are ATMs at 8 spots. Smoking is only allowed at the 7 designated areas. Each guide shows exact locations with photos.

Visiting with Kids
HILL SIDE has a playground with a merry-go-round and other rides, perfect for when the kids have had enough of shopping. Kids will also love the Pokémon store.
Bringing Your Dog
Gotemba is pet-friendly, with leash hooks, paw-washing stations, and water fountains. Whether your dog can go inside depends on the store, so check the sign at each entrance.

Konohana no Yu Hot Spring
After a full day on your feet, the on-site hot spring Konohana no Yu works wonders. Soaking in the outdoor bath with Mt. Fuji in view is how I always end my Gotemba days. There's also a hotel on the grounds, HOTEL CLAD, if you want to stay over and be first in line on a sale morning.

How long do I need?
Seeing all ~290 stores takes more than a full day. Narrow it to a handful of target brands and shop around their zone, and half a day is enough. Plan your route on the floor map first.
Can I shop tax-free?

How do I avoid traffic?
During Golden Week, Obon, New Year, and sale periods, arrive before opening or take the direct bus. If you drive, head for lot P7. The parking guide has the details.
